“Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.”

-Lao Tzu

In the suit of Earth the two leads us to the realization that everything in the material world is in a process of transformation. From the seasons to the exchange of money to the growth of our fingernails, all is changing all the time. The Two of Disks advises us to roll with it, even have fun inhabiting a world  spinning too fast for anything to remain in one place for long. Meditate on how the life cycle comes full circle and repeats itself endlessly. Don’t hold too tightly to each moment or to your material possessions. Learn to dance along as the music changes.

That ‘don’t hold on too tight’ message is the greatest wisdom of this card. The juggler in the RWS image doesn’t seem to have a tight grip or absolute control over his whirling pentacles, but that’s why the whole contraption can keep going, providing the fun he’s having. We can take the enjoyment out of life’s spontaneous surprises in the futile exercise of trying to make the good last forever and to get the bad over-with.

This card wants us to live in the now. Anything that takes you out of the present moment is advised against: ruminations on the past, anticipation of the future, resentments, anxieties. Take a deep breath and inhabit your body and your world as it is right this minute.

Meditations/ Questions for a Two of Disks Day

Is it more your habit to be alert in the moment or to be thinking of something else?

How open are you to changing plans once they’ve been made?

What is the last utterly spontaneous good time you experienced? Did you initially resist it?

Time is all we are given in our lives, and nobody knows how much.
