“I’ve begun to realize that you can listen to silence and learn from it. It has a quality and a dimension all its own.”
-Chaim Potok
How do we reconcile the realm of thought with solidity and containment? How do thoughts, which wander and race and circle back on themselves, find their way in the solid prism of the Fours? Through seclusion and meditation.
While stillness in emotion can bog us down, stillness of mind is a powerful tool for transformation. The Four of Swords is a card we are living when we know we need to find a quiet place without distractions to clear our head. It is needed when the chatter of our habitual thoughts, entertainments, fixations and other trivia have drowned out the clear voice of our own mind. The idea of getting someone/ something “out of your head” may be advised.
The depiction of stillness and silence on this card is usually related to graveyard or memorial imagery, which can be unsettling. It’s appropriate. One of the fears that holds us back from the kind of solitude and open listening this card advises is our fear that we may actually abandon thoughts that no longer (maybe never did) serve us. Why would we avoid this liberation? We too often identify ourselves by what we think. Releasing these old thought patterns, learning a new way to live in the world, hints to us that we are not permanent. And the dreaded end of a train of thought about impermanence is our own mortality. In Buddhism the meditation on death is considered the king of all meditations. How would your life change if you truly understood its end is inevitable and will feel too soon no matter when it happens?
A period of convalescence after injury or trauma is also implied by this card. There are times when a break we would never allow ourselves to take is forced upon us by an accident. The downtime is unavoidable, we may as well use it wisely. We can allow our mind to slow down and observe itself. We can give our attention some room to wander and discover.

Meditations/ Questions for a Four of Swords Day
Do you avoid or embrace silence and solitude?
When was the last time you took a mental health break?
Do you consider yourself in control of your thoughts or the other way around?
There are aspects of our psyche that will find a way to demand attention if we don’t explore them.
