SEVEN

of WANDS

This is a card of…

Higher Ground

Defending Yourself

Perseverance

Readiness

Resolution

“Victory is won not in miles but in inches. Win a little now, hold your ground, and later, win a little more.”

– Louis L’amour

The play-sparring of the Five was practice for this tougher test of our diligence and resolve. The figure in the Seven understands how to seize the advantage of the high ground, as well as how to defend it. He does not allow himself to be enticed away from his good position. The fiery chaotic energy of Wands has learned some discipline and strategy. This is also a card of battling it out on one’s own, or being the one soldier who can turn the tide of the battle.

This card speaks of times in our lives when we feel cornered or backed against a wall. It advises us to hold our ground and defend our own principles and ideals.

It needn’t be a serious battle. Sometimes simply refusing to be manipulated or pushed around by others is what this card is talking about. When we don’t allow passive-aggressive tactics by others to move us, but instead greet them with honest assertion of our own rights, we are living the Seven of Wands; or when a dozen challenges fall on our path and we simply get on with overcoming them, or when we resist the temptation to not do our workout/ writing/ practice today.

It’s worth noticing how active and involved the figure in the RWS looks. When we push through the inner and outer barriers the drive begins to fuel itself, creating a winning momentum. That’s why our fellow has the high ground. And why he’ll keep it.

Meditations/ Questions for a Seven of Wands Day

What moment in your life are you most proud of standing your ground despite pressure to give in?

Are you comfortable telling people “no”?

What principle would you defend no matter what?

Sometimes the fight to keep hold of something is what gives it value.
