EIGHT

of SWORDS

This is a card of…

Self-limitation

Ignorance

Paralysis

Feeling cornered

Compulsion

“The punishment of every disordered mind is its own disorder.”

-St. Augustine

Intellect is a powerful gift, so powerful that it can sometimes function like an elaborate engine we don’t quite know how to operate.

The endgame of overthinking (or compulsive repetitive thinking) is an isolating and imaginary prison. In the RWS image, we see a woman blindfolded and loosely bound, a sort of cage of swords standing around her. There’s a pretty big gap in this cage right behind her, and it looks like making her way out of those ropes would be pretty easy, but she stands rigidly still. It’s a great visual metaphor for how completely we believe in our own limiting thoughts simply because we keep thinking them over and over.

This card wants you to shake off those ropes and pull off that blindfold. Do you really have “no choice” in a situation you are in right now? Are you ignoring the less cerebral signals- gut instinct, your emotions, your real desires- or worse, denying their existence? Perhaps there is an obvious and sensible next step you are unwilling to even acknowledge?

Another meaning for the Eight of Swords is being trapped in an ideological debate that drains your mind, energy, and time but produces nothing. Robin Scott, creator the wonderful Urban Tarot, brilliantly relates this card to the snare of arguing on social media threads. .

Meditations/ Questions for an Eight of Swords Day

Where in your life do you feel hemmed in or trapped? Is it possible there is a way out you’re not acknowledging?

What line of thought would you like to clear out of your mind for good?

Are you arguing in circles with someone over a subject of little consequence?

If someone close bombards us with negative thoughts, our mind tends to take over when they are gone.
