IV.
The EMPEROR
This is a card of…
Structure
Boundaries
Foundation
Authority
Regulation
“It is necessary, and even vital, to set standards for your life and the people you allow in it.”
-Mandy Hale
The Emperor’s cool rational containment comes into existence to discipline and direct the overflowing and unruly forces represented by Key III. Structures are built to make sure a life-giving river does not become destructive when rains are too heavy, and maybe some energy from all that flowing water is captured into the bargain.
On a personal level the emotions and drives that make life vibrant need to be reined in and carefully directed for our own good and the good of others. Rules must be made and enforced. When incidents of theft or assault threaten peace, the Emperor punishes transgressors and restores order.
The discipline and structure of Key IV form the foundations of any civilization, but there is always a danger of becoming too rigid. The Emperor likes rules, compartments, boundaries and order; he doesn’t bother much about emotional life. The repression of powerful forces with no slow-release valve can make them more dangerous in the long run. His management of natural forces is so effective at times he might be deluded into believing those forces can never overpower him.
Many refer to the Empress and Emperor as the mother and father figure of the First Line. The Empress is the nurturing mother, the Emperor the disciplining father. We find these gender-specific parenting roles somewhat archaic. It is more helpful to see the Empress as Nature, without which we could not survive; and the Emperor as structural authority, without which there could be no civilization.
Advice:
Practice self-control
A place for everything, and everything in its place.
Make sure your foundation is sound.
Respect boundaries- your own and others’
Warning:
No plan is foolproof, no safeguard invincible.
Repressed energies grow stronger, you need a release valve.
Sometimes you have to let others make their own mistakes.
Meditations/ Questions for an Emperor Day
Is there a strong, stable foundation you can rely on in your life? If not, how might you create one?
Is there room for spontaneity in your life? If not, how might you create some?
Is someone not honoring your boundaries? Are you violating someone else’s?
Living ‘by the rulebook’ doesn’t sound exciting, but it does mean others can count your integrity.
