This is a card of…

Hope

Renewal

Beauty

Belonging

Service to community

“Hope was tricky like water. Somehow it always found a way in.”

-Leigh Bardugo, Ruin and Rising

Key 17 is a card best understood as the follow-up to the proceeding card, the Tower. After disaster and trauma, the Star restores hope and connection to the world.

The destruction of the Tower was devastating, but had to (eventually) be accepted. Imagine the figure who fell from the tower walking out to explore the evening landscape beyond the ruins, feeling wounded, alone and lost.

But even in the dark of night there is a source of light- we happen upon a scene of tranquil beauty. A lovely maiden pouring pure waters into earth and river, one foot on each, under a starlit sky. The vision is magical and lasts only a moment, but our perception is profoundly changed by it. We look around at the landscape (the world the Tower was built to avoid) and suddenly see clearly- it’s beautiful out here! What a gorgeous, perfect night. What a lovely, clear river rambling through green hills!

And what a clear sky- the stars- free from the Tower we can now see clearly how to navigate. We are not lost. We will find our way.

The Star is a card of hope, renewed faith and wonder. It’s the special kind of spiritual refreshment that can only happen after hardship. It’s the card of everything’s going to be alright. The card above, the Chariot, is about constructing an ego to ride out into the world. The Star is about loosening the ego’s grip on the self to become part of the world. It is a return to vulnerability, openness and trust; a time of self-compassion and compassion for others.

There is a sense of belonging to and serving a larger community. We recognize the importance of the collective good to our own happiness, and of our own happiness to the collective.

What a gorgeous night.
